Chapter 21

Like the Bodies of Traitors

The army marched, revived, following the perpetual flame, whispering like a religious procession. There were no cries or lamentations or barbaric din, but only a delicate thundering on cobblestones mixed with the galloping of the horses. The celestial fire did not remain in the sky for long, but faded, devoured by darkness, little by little. The peat bog fell into nocturnal silence, while the army navigated between ponds and pools of water, travelling on paths that were so narrow that they created problems for the passage of siege weapons, still shrouded in the mystery of the Red Devils.

The two Lords no longer had anything to say to the entity, as providential as it was disagreeable, that guided them towards salvation. Tyra galloped in a saddle with Elisabet surrounded by family and friends, as weary as an old woman ready to pass to the next life. The Dragon, concealed in his helmet, was unable to say anything, as he was too busy holding back the tremors in his limbs, caused by the explosive anger of his heart.

Grudak appeared darkly, with the effects of war visible through the gloom of night. The vampires had besieged the city harshly: bodies of men, dragged into the sky and then allowed to fall, were found on the road to the drawbridge. The corpses of Alps, looking like tailors' pincushions full of arrows, lay on the walls wedged between the battlements. It was a very unpleasant homage to the crazy nights of the Inferno of Peat.

The troops of the city, very unhappy and very watchful, were waiting with a barge on the opposite side of the moat for the new guests. Access to Grudak was by boat only, as there was no solid land apart from where the buildings stood. The entire urban area had been made possible by earthworks built, with great expenditure of lives, by the first inhabitants, in the water of one of the larger lakes in that infernal place.

The imposing defensive walls plunged into the unhealthy waters, filled with rotting vegetation, until they stuck solidly into the rock through the muddy lakebed. These protections rose austere, the visible section made of small terracotta bricks, being easier to carry by boat than huge blocks of stone. Their fragility was combined with engineering solutions never used before, thanks to which the walls seemed to be inviolable.

Over an open portal and a narrow portion of the wall loomed two imposing towers whose lower extremities went right into the water. Behind the gates, a city in fervent activity could be seen. Everywhere people were cleaning the buildings of the carrion that had fallen upon them.

"Here are your new guests. Ferry them across as soon as possible. Lead the silent Lords to your King, for urgent business must be discussed!" ordered Kaarn, who still had something to say, and, approaching Holaf, whispered: "Lord of the North, you are silent, holding a grudge like an infant over one man, when the entire city
